Hundreds of couples get engaged in the winter time, and it’s really no surprise. Cold weather has couples cuddling up and feeling closer than ever. Not to mention engagement rings make wonderful Christmas presents!
Many newly engaged couples have engagement photos taken to include on their save the date cards. To inspire your engagement photo shoot, we’ve listed the 10 most popular save the date photo ideas. Let’s take a look!
1.) The ‘Almost Kiss’
There’s a reason so many great romance movie posters have a couple gazing into each other’s eyes with their lips inches apart. This classic pose reveals the passion between two lovers while leaving the kiss itself to the imagination. The snowy “almost kiss” photo below by Bryce Covey Photography is a great example.
The photographer can capture the “almost kiss” sitting or standing in a variety of romantic settings. Closed eyes convey longing and anticipation, while open eyes convey playful flirtiness. A simple hand placed on the jawline can easily show off that lovely new engagement ring in the photo.
2.) The Piggyback Ride
A piggyback ride photo is a great way to capture the playfulness of love. Not only is this pose a fun way to be photographed cheek to cheek, but with arms draped around the neck, it’s easy to show off an engagement ring in the shot too.
A piggyback ride pose is particularly helpful if you happen to be a good deal taller or shorter than your partner since the shorter partner usually is the one getting lifted. This helps couples with big height differences avoid the imbalance that might result from a typical side-by-side photo.
3.) Nautical Themed
Another enduring trend we’ve been seeing in save the date photos is nautical themes. Sailboats, oars, life rings, and anchors are common motifs. We love the life ring and oar props that were used to announce the wedding date in the photo below by Ashley Blevins Photography.
A nautical themed save the date is a great option if you’re also planning a nautical themed wedding. A simple sailor knot, or perhaps an anchor, is the perfect image to establish your theme.
4.) Enjoying a Favorite Activity Together
Action photos taken around your favorite shared activities are a great way to show your love through common interests. Whether it’s shooting pool, riding Harleys, or playing beach volleyball, plenty of great photos result when you’re not so much posing as you are simply living your life. The photo below by Taylor & Ben Photography is a great example of a couple baking together in their engagement shots.
While there’s nothing wrong with traditional engagement poses, action photos are a great way to produce candid save the date photos rather than staged ones. It’s a particularly good option for couples who feel uncomfortable posing for photos or who simply aren’t the type to smile for the camera.
5.) Posing at the Location You Met
Do you remember where you were when you met your fiance? Some really clever save the date photo ideas result from exploring this concept. For example, if you met on a college campus, you can have your engagement photo shoot on the steps of one of the historic buildings at your alma mater, or in an empty classroom where you once took the same classes and laughed at each other’s jokes. The whimsical, classroom engagement photo below by Andria Lo Photography is a great example.
A photo shoot at the location you met is a particularly great idea if there’s a clever story behind it all. For instance, if you met at the candy aisle of a grocery store, a photo holding colorful lollipops might be a whimsical take on the story. If you met at the airport, a travel-themed photo with suitcase props could be fun.
6.) Sweet Kiss on the Cheek
A kiss on the cheek is an enduring engagement photo pose, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s perfect for close-ups, and the person being kissed can’t help but smile their most genuine smile. With this pose, you can still easily show off your engagement ring with your left hand lifted to your partner’s shoulder or chest.
7.) Balloon Engagement Photos
When you’re in love, it sometimes feels like you’re floating. Featuring balloons in your engagement photos conveys the sweet buoyancy of love. Balloon engagement photos can be classy if you stick to a neutral color palette, like the white balloons paired with the white engagement dress shown in the photo below by Brittany Esther Photography.
As an alternative, you can make your photos pop with balloons in bold primary colors. Balloon colors that match your wedding colors is another great idea.
8.) Posing in Rain or Snow
For couples who get engaged in the winter or spring, posing in the rain or snow produces some truly great save the date photos. A “kissing in the rain” photo calls to mind some of our favorite scenes from romantic movies like The Notebook, Sweet Home Alabama, 50 First Dates, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Engagement photos in the rain or snow convey a sense that you and your partner are so in love that you sometimes lose sight of your surroundings. A little rain or snow never hurt nobody, after all!
9.) Antler Save the Date Photos
Antlers are everywhere in wedding decor lately, serving as rustic centerpieces, components of bridal bouquets, and folksy focal points in contemporary engagement photography.
If you and/or your partner are into hunting, antlers are also a fun way to tap a beloved pastime for save the date photo ideas. The great thing about antlers is that their jagged points are perfect for holding engagement rings, which creates all kinds of unique photo possibilities.
10.) Feet in the Foreground
Last but not least, one of the most clever save the date photo ideas is announcing your wedding date on your feet or shoes. Couples who live in the country have done this with cowboy boots, while couples who live in the city have pulled off the the idea with high heels and dress shoes. The photo below by Jen Rodriguez is a great example.
If you don’t feel like writing on the bottom of your shoes, you can also do a fun foot announcement on bare feet. Just don’t try it if you’re ticklish!
